Doxa Take 3-0 Win Away to Artesia

Doxa completed the league double over Artesia DES with a comprehensive 3-0 away win on Sunday.

15 minutes in, Kyle Holland hit a cross-field pass to Ricky Figueroa around midfield. He collected and picked his head up to play a threaded pass with precision and weight to Steve Merker who scored the first goal. Second goal came just before the stroke of halftime. Ilia Nazarov (who arrived right at kick-off) was subbed on for Holland at left midfield. A quick combination worked an opening in the center of midfield to spring Villalobos down the left side, after a few dance moves usually reserved for the disco-tech’s in Hollywood, Villa separated, to pass a deft ball to the back of the six yard box. Chirgwin collected craftfully around his defender with his right peg across his body, setting up the defender to swipe & miss, the ball sat nicely for him to smash low into the far post with his left instep.

The third goal came in the second half. A ball found Ricky’s feet on the right side just advanced passed midfield. He cut inside his defender and played a daisy-cutter to the Russian Rocket breaking into the penalty area. The rocket didn’t even need to break stride, the ball stroked his foot into the back of the net just as the large rhinoceros goalkeeper was coming out of his cage.

Doxa Rewind – Taking Over Sunset Blvd 2005 State Cup

After winning the 2005 California Soccer Association South State Cup, Doxa had the privilege of taking over Sunset Blvd!! (pictured below)

Doxa Win Cup Game Versus Artesia Reserves

Doxa got back to winning ways with a strong 7-0 win at Faye Ross middle school in Artesia. Playing on grass, it turned out to be a tougher game than normal for the Doxa midfield who reverted to long balls instead of short passes that kept getting stuck in the longer surface.

Doxa got on the board early, when Andrew Villalobos sent a ball through the middle to Byrne who lobbed it over the onrushing keeper. The same combo added the second when Villalobos cross was headed in by Byrne. Steve Merker got the first of his Doxa career when he drilled an effort past the keeper from just inside the box. And the half time score was 4-0 when Andrew Villalobos hit a screamer from outside the box into the top corner.

The second half produced more chances for Doxa, but it wasn’t until the 70th minute when the fifth came. Marcus Watson played a ball down the wing to Byrne who squared a cross to the head of Merker for his second of the game. Byrne sealed his hat-trick off a Zach Roberts cross with 10 minutes to go, heading it off the post and in. And the final goal came when Merker unselfishly squared a ball to a wide open Byrne to tap home. Team work by Merker!

Doxa return to the same venue next week for a league encounter with Artesia’s first team.

Newcomers Pateadores Fall 3-1 to Doxa

Doxa started the year with a 3-1 win over league newcomers Pateadores on Saturday evening at Manhattan Village.

As usual a strong crown showed up to watch Doxa play in their first game of 2010. They had the advantage of watching Doxa start against 10 men, with Pateadores failing to field a full team at kick off. By the time they had an 11th man, Doxa had taken the league. mat Davis played a wonderful through ball to Pete Hazdovac who neatly chipped the ball over the onrushing keeper. Half time saw the score sitting at 1-0.

John Gerrard, who was officially making his first appearance back as Doxa coach, made some half time changes that sparked Doxa into action. The second goal didn’t take long to come, and it was a give and go between Mat Davis and Steve Merker that allowed the later to play a square ball to Raul Palomares. Raul shot first time, drilling the ball just inside the left post. Doxa should have been awarded a penalty in the build up but the ref allowed advantage and Doxa took advantage.

Doxa’s third goal came less than 10 minutes after the second. It was Ricky Figueroa who got the assist, crossing to Bryan Byrne who volleyed the ball (Robin Van Persie style) in the top right corner of the net. The third goal allowed Gerrard to make some changes and get some fresh faces on the field. Two of those new players combined for what would have been goal of the season – only for the linesman to raise his flag. Andrew Villalobos fluffed a shot, which went sky high over the last defender, dropping for Zach Roberts to drive into the top corner. One of those “if only” moments! Pateadores did get on board in the final 5 minutes of the game, taking away a near perfect performance from Doxa’s backline and Brandon Avery in goal.

Doxa play at home again next weekend, against CGSA at 6pm.
