Get in the Box with Joe Cartlidge

Joe Cartlidge Doxa Italia

It is that time again, as we “Get in the Box” with another one of your favorite Doxa stars. This time we get up close and personal with left back, Joe Cartlidge. Known for his easy going approach to life and his heading ability (some actually say he leaps higher than an Alaskan Salmon, others think he could easily out jump Blake Griffin) Joe is a team player who is always willing to step up and take on a task for a teammate! Currently sporting a wilderness style beard, we caught up with Joe and here is what he had to say.

Name: Joseph Cartlidge
Occupation: Beer Specialist, Whole Foods Market
Position: Defender, primarily used on the left.

Tell us about your career before Doxa:
After losing the National Championship match my Senior year at CSUDH, I stayed as far away from competitive soccer as I could. I couldn’t get the defeat out of my head for the longest time, and it wasn’t until I was introduced to beach soccer (thank you Austin Roman!) that I realized soccer was more than a final score.

Soccer career highlight:
2000 – National Championship match my Junior year at CSUDH (we won 2-1 in the 4th OT!!)
2010 – Traveling to Portugal with the US National Beach Soccer team to compete in the Mundialito tournament against Brazil, Portugal and Argentina.

joe playing beachFavorite player to play with:
The first player that popped into my head was Juan Carlos (JC) Bolanos. Incredible scoring machine and terrifically smooth on the ball.

Favorite moment outside of soccer:
Cliffs of Moher trail run with my brother.

Most embarrassing story you have on another player:
I’ll embarrass the hell out of myself before I would a friend. Sorry man, no stories here.

Most Likely on the team to:

  • Score an own goal: Me, because my passing is atrocious.
  • Get sent off: Nate Reeves, because he loves yelling.
  • Get goal of the season: Bryan Byrne, because he’s the fricking Energizer bunny and can’t be stopped.
  • Show up to a game with no gear: David Adams, because he stayed out all night and thought he was showing up to “party and party and party”.
  • Have to go to rehab: Again, David Adams.

Joe on the sidelines

As a beer connoisseur, give us your insight on the following:

Best Beer of all time: My all-time favorite, that can be enjoyed year-round, is Kern River Brewing Company’s Just Outstanding IPA. It’s a West Coast-style IPA that blends Simcoe and Amarillo hops to give the beer a fantastic grapefruit and apricot essence, which combine perfectly with its caramel malt backbone. The beer isn’t overly bitter like some IPAs, but in order to get the most out of it, please drink it out of a glass! Utilizing your sense of smell is crucial in beer tasting.Joe Cartlidge - beer connoisseur
A beer worth paying big money for: There are so many fantastic beers out there that are priced to sell, but if you have a couple extra bucks to burn, you gotta try Uinta Brewing Company’s Labyrinth ($14.99 for 25.4 ounces). Labeled a “Black Ale,” it’s technically a rye whiskey, barrel-aged, double imperial stout. If you’re unfamiliar with Imperial Stouts, they can be hit or miss. Some are overly sweet, due to the fact that they involve large amounts of sugar (which is what the yeast feeds on in order to create alcohol). Some are reminiscent of a Japanese spin-the-bottle session and taste like soy sauce. Labyrinth is everything you want in an Imperial Stout – bittersweet chocolate, roasted coffee, medium alcohol flavor, and a hint of licorice root. At 13.2% ABV, it’s a beer that will put hair on your chest and tell you it’s okay to drunk dial your old baby sitter to let her know she will always be “the one.”
Number one Beer to avoid: Similar to human beings, there are plenty of lame beers out there. But like us, all beers serve a purpose. Just enjoy what’s in front of you and thank the Egyptians, Inca, Germans, Belgians, whoever it was that first let bacteria build on grain and combine with water, hops and yeast to become the libation we all enjoy to this day…in front of the television, in a boat, on a bench, on a beach, in a buddy’s backyard, in bed, bored, baked, buzzed, bewildered, beguiled. It’s all good.
Best liquor on the market: After visiting Scotland, I am a big fan of Scotch, but my family is from Kentucky and Bourbon is in my blood, so I gotta go with Maker’s Mark.

Tell us how your recent trip to Scotland went: Glasgow, Brew Dog, Loch Lomond, Kilchurn Castle, Skye, Talisker, Inverness, Cardhu, Edinburgh, Glen Kinchie, Haggis, Neeps, Tatties, Steak and Ale Pies, Tenants, a perfect partner, and the kindest people on the planet. Not a bad trip.

Get in the Box with Brian Burdue

Over the past several Doxa Italia seasons, Brian Burdue has been a staple in the squad. Everybecks team needs a ‘Burdue’; a player who in his natural position as keeper is hard to beat, and who can step out on to the field  to give a solid perforance. We have seen this several times this season, when with only 12 or 13 players, the Gaffer has played Burdue up top. Add to that the fact that his camera has seen more player action and pics than Tina Turner, and you know he has some stories to share. We caught up with Brian to find out a little more about him in and out of the game.

Soccer career highlight:
That Rose Bowl 7aside match was a good one (see story below somewhere). Playing against a full strength Galaxy side in a charity match is a good highlight too. Playing in Mexico with some big name players for charity is a good one too..

You have been known to play up top, describe your favorite goal:
I was playing on the left and a free kick was served up from the right which took a deflection out to where I was (about 25 yrds out). In full stride I knocked a full volley as hard as I could. Normally it would end up 70 yrds away over the tennis courts etc. I couldn’t have hit it any better and it curled around everybody who was in the box and smashed into the net just inside the far post. Keeper never moved and the Mitre Power Shot clocked it at 83mph.

Any other ones we should know about?
I have scored as keeper a few times. Usually coming up on a corner kick or taking a penalty but during a 7aside match, Doxa was playing in the final and it was a standoff at 0-0. The opposing team were pushing forward and Paul Rottenberg sent me a ball that the striker was chasing hard. I beat him to it and just hammered it. The pitch was maybe 80 yrds and I was at the top of the box. Well it caught the wind right or something cause next thing I know I see their keeper tangled in the net as he scrambled back for the ball that beat him and scored. We won the final 1-0.

Favorite player to play with:
There’s a few but I’ve always done well with Chirgy. Use to say that if he scored and I was in net we won. Think that still holds true.

Outside of soccer, what do you like doing:
I’m a metal/music guy and like to go to gigs. I missed a game a few weeks back as I was in Vegas for Metallica andwedding day Machine Head.

Favorite moment outside of soccer:
Meeting my wife. She’s by far the best thing ever.

Favorite beer:
Jack Daniels

Peter Schmeichel or David Seaman:
Schmeichel, he was amazing.

Most embarrassing story do you have on another player:
You don’t talk about fight club.  Sorry B. UCSB Fiesta Tourny 2004 had some fun times. Jabba the Sharpton, The puke in the kit bag incident. ahhh memories.

Most Likely on the team to

  • Score an own goal:
Nas..Done it more than once on me. (Infamous Vegas quarters own goal with less than a min remaining in the match sent us out of the tourny). Omie Doufie is a close second.
  • Get sent off:vegas06
    Chirgs or Nate
  • Get goal of the season:
    Derk or Chirgs
  • Show up to a game with no gear:
Me – I forgotten my gloves or boots or jersey many times.
  • Miss a game because they are at a poker table in Vegas:
Steve Boyle – It’s funny cause it’s true
  • Have to go to rehab:
    All of us…except Derk.

Words From the Gaffer; Thanksgiving Edition

“Well, credit due to where it belongs; Craig-Brian +2, and of course father Derk for keeping things going. His persistance is testimony to the way he plays, you owe him all of you! The famous 5 are now in place, so things should run a littleCoach John Gerard smoother on the ownership front, I thank you. Player wise the depth of the squad has won the majority of the games, give or take some brilliant goals (Chirgs, Derk, Craig) that would end up in anybodies top 10 for the season. Special mention to Rob for keeping the team well oiled! A FEW MORE SHOULD ATTEND MORE OFTEN, if only for a diet coke and something to eat……this is the reason the lads have been together, team spirit etc.

Notes on last couple of games:
The Corona game: I thought the bruise bros took care of business, smash em, bash em and generally abuse them, won the game for us. Field didn’t suit us, much too tight and we didn’t adapt to a long ball game too well. Credit to the Greek princess who stole the show, nas wont read this – no e-mail.

Garden Grove game: Snoop Dog`s alcoholic haze, was felt along our back 3 for the first 10 mins or so, the Egyptian rapper being most affected! But as usual Aggro + Maximus righted the ship. Last 30 mins of the half  normal service was resumed, 3 great goals Derk`s the pick, and we spread the ball well, especially out of the back, giving Pikey + Ilia plenty of ball.
Second half…..Pete scored a cracker and that was it….number of contenders for the yellow rag.

See u on December 2nd.
The Gaffer.

Villalobos Heads to Germany

With 1 goal and 3 assists in the first 4 games this season, Andrew Villalobos has become a huge part ofAndrew Villalobos the Doxa Italia family. This week he heads off to Germany on trial, with the intent to get himself a professional contract (he has passed on his cell phone plan in preparation to make a name for himself in Europe!). Andrew took some time to talk about his trip and what he will be up to:

“Right now, I know I will be going on trial with FC Homburg, FC Saarbrucken, SV Eintracht Trier, possibly Kickers Offenbach and a few others I don’t remember. I got into contact with Thomas Dooley through my old agent Lisa WuFate. He was impressed with my play and so, agreed to also work for me and set some trials up for me in Germany with several teams from the second through fifth division. I went this time last year and things went well, but I was rushed for time and due to several unfortunate circumstances, nothing got finalized with any club. Thomas told me that the best option is to be in Germany so that it will be easier for clubs to see me play, which is why this time I plan to live in Germany for up to six months, giving me the best chance possible at staying. Nothing is guaranteed so I will take it one day at a time and keep you all updated! I have enjoyed playing with you all, and want to say thanks for taking me in. Good luck with the rest of the season boys, keep up the good work and win the title!”
More info on Andrew and his college career can be found on the UCR website.

The whole Doxa Family wishes Andrew the best of luck with his trip to Germany. If anyone wants to leave some Advice or well wishes for Andrew please do so in the comment section below.

Get in the Box with Eric Meister

Eric Meister joined the team last season for the Tournament of Iran Cup in Fullerton. At that time he had just arrived back to California after finishing college. Since that time, he has worked extremely hard for the team, and has ultimately cemented his position at left back. Ask any of the other players, and they are likely to say he is one the fittest on the team. I must also add that he has scored some cracking goals over the last year.

Name: Eric MeisterEric Meister
Occupation: Operations Manager/Accountant
Position: Defender/Midfield

Tell us about you career before Doxa: Played club soccer in California then went to go play soccer for the University of Rochester. Played and started all 4 years, all conference player every year from 2004-2007 and was named to the region team 2006 and 2007. During college, I played PDL for the Indiana Invaders for two years.  After college, I tried to play in the USL but nothing happened so I came home and have been playing with Doxa. Last January and February I was on trials with FSV Frankfurt which is a 2nd Division German team.

You missed last weekends game, why? How was it? Did not play last weekend because I was in Las Vegas with my friends for his bachelor party and his wedding. I don’t really remember the first 2 days but from what I remember it was a great time.

Favorite Player to play with: I like playing mostly with Nate Reeves because the guy is a machine. He loves playing, tackles hard and has fun with it, even though I think he is either drunk or hung over half of the games. Plus I cant stop laughing at the fact that he called a ref a donkey and started making donkey noises at him during West LA League.

Most Likely on the team to:

  • Challenge you for the ball: There is just not one person, everyone on the team is so competitive, they all challenge for the ball.
  • Score an Own goal: Ryan Taylor
  • Score a 90th minute winner: I would say either Derk Droze, Bryan Byrne, or Ilia…I think everyone usually depends on them to score at critical times and they usually do.
  • Miss an open net: Probably Ryan Taylor because Ive seen him do it so many times during training
  • Get a red card: Nate Reeves, Steve Chirgy, Omar, Craig Reynolds those are the ones off the top of my head. Ive seen these guys get red cards all in the same weekend.

Other sports/hobbies? I like to surf, wake board, and play tennis

Childhood highlight:
When I was younger my parents paid me for every goal I scored, I love the weekends

Favorite moment outside of soccer:
hahaha, so many but this my favorite. Senior year in High school, my friend and I were at our schools football game watching  Mark Sanchez pick our football team’s defense apart…it was 42-0 at halftime. The other team brought their mascot (a diablo) to our home field, so my buddy and I talked to our schools mascotts (cougars) and some how got them to give us their outfits. We walked out on the field during half time and saw the diablo looking at us and taunting us with his schools flag once we stepped onto the field. My friend and I looked at each other and started charging at him and we straight up laid him out in the middle of the field, right in front of their football team. We tackled the mascot and took their flag and ran around until we were caught by our principal and Assistant Principal. Everyone in the crowd  was chanting “Animal Rights.” Once we were released from being scolded at, everyone who was at the game was outside in the parking lot cheering for us.

Anything else you want to add to spice it up:
Believe it or another one of my friends and I have won several beer pong cash-tournaments around Orange County ,  I noticed Nate likes to play beer pong, so if Nate wants to really get hammered just play my buddy and I.

Get in the Box with Nate Reeves

Notice where the ball is!

Notice where the ball is!

With the CSL season fast approaching, we thought it would be a good opportunity post the first ‘Get in the Box’ features where we catch up with Doxa players new and old to find out a little more about them. In the first edition, we caught up with experienced hard hitting defender, Nate Reeves to learn more about his personality and find out how he really feels about his team mates!

Name: Nathan “the Angry One” Reeves
Occupation: Property Manager
Position: Where I can can get stuck in the most.
Years with Doxa: 4 amazing, yet blurry years.  I think all the Vegas tournaments are finally starting to catch up with me cause it feels like a hell of a lot longer than that.

Nate and Nas are 'close' friends!

Nate and Nas are 'close' friends!

Soccer career highlight: Making it to the finals in Div II, and then losing!  Did someone say 10 minutes to go?  Not sure if that’s really a highlight, but my meltdown I had on that ref about a month and a half ago was truly a great highlight!!  Donkey!!!
Favorite player to play with: Well, being a defender who enjoys tackles I’d have to say the Big Greek, NASOOOOOOOOOS!  The guy is just everywhere and even when he makes a crushing tackle he is the first guy helping you back up.  I’ve never played with a nicer guy who truly enjoys the sport!!Welcome back Nas!
Favorite player to play against: I just enjoy playing so I can’t say there’s one particular player, but I love playing against cocky players that think they’ve done something in their careers, whether it be played for a top Div I school or professionally somewhere and knowing that no matter where they’ve played, they still get balled up.

Most likely player on the team to:

  • score a hattrick? The white Pele, Steve “Chirgalicious” Chirgwin, but Captain Derk is ever present and always a threat  in the air or around the box.
  • get goal of the season? This guy has a knack for scoring some amazing goals at the most random times, Ryan “I wish I didn’t have long red hair” Tyler
  • get a red card? Easy, YOURS TRULY SON!!
  • fall over the ball? Hahahaha probably Bryan Byrne or that crazy Egyptian guy, ”O” to the “mazing, ” Omar.
  • be drunk for 90 minutes?Sean “I’m going through a mid-life crisis” Lockhart, but I would have to say it would be a close second for about half our team!

Always in Fashion!Other sports you play/have played? I’m a big golfer, but love playing baseball, basketball, surfing, beer pong, and basically anything and everything and if we can mix in a beer or ten, even better!
Childhood highlight? Having my sister play on our elementary school soccer team and ball it up.  When she would play forward, I would play defense and vice-verse.  It was just a rarity to see a girl playing with all guys and on top of that having her on my team tearing it up was a great experience.
Favorite moment outside of soccer? Being a groomsman in one of my best friends wedding!  That whole weekend was awesome!  Truly an amazing experience and very blessed to be apart of that!  Thanks Aaron and Mel!
Whats your favorite beer? Newcastle - but anything that’s cold and quick to get to is always good.
Favorite bar? Robbie G, G-R-U-N-I-O-N-S!!  However I have heard the Tilted Kilt is quite lovely.
Cher or Madonna? Madonna, but Madonna in the 80′s, not now.  Cher’s always looked like a man, so negative on that!
If you could marry any women in the world who would it be? Marisa Miller, AMAZING!!!!!!!
