Doxa Take 6-3 Win Over Salinas Tires (Angels C)

Doxa continued their good form in the Angels Confrontational league with a solid 6-3 win over Salinas Tires.

Steve Chirgwin got things rolling with a neat finish on the back post, after Derk Droze jumped to nod a cross back across goal. The second was a cracking finish, with Chirgwin chipping the keeper from outside the box, the ball looped in just underneath the post. The third came from Johnny Alcaraz as he grabbed his 4th goal in 2 games, this time Droze drilled a shot from the top of the box that the keep could only parry into Alcaraz path. The score at half was 3-1.

Doxa continued good form in the second, and having gone interchanged goals before finishing with a fine 6-3 win. Justin Commins, playing in the second half, won then lost, then won the yellow jersey for this week. He gave away a penalty, then saved it, before scuffing a back-pass into the forwards path right before the end of the game! Well deserved Justin!

Doxa Fall to First Loss of Season (Angels Confrontational)

Doxa fell to a 1-0 loss versus a strong San Nicholas team on Friday, October 28th. Both teams had several good chances to score, but good goalkeeping and some bad misses kept the scoring at a minimum.

It ended up being a relatively easy night for Doxa on Sunday versus La Maquina, with a solid 9-0 scoreline. Unfortunately, with such a high scoreline it is tough to give commentary on each goal – but please enjoy the summary listed below!

Doxa Take 5-2 Win (Angels Confrontational)

Doxa continued their winning streak in the Angels confrontational league on Friday night with a 5-2 win over Antes Columbus FC.

With a full squad on hand, coach Derk Droze had a wealth of options to choose from and after 10 minutes, it was evident that he got things right. It only took Doxa 2 minutes to get the first, a ball down the left side found Ryan Taylor, who beat a defender and played a cross into Bryan Byrne. Byrne collected the ball before firing past the keeper. The same combo got the second goal, with Taylor chipping a ball over the top, Byrne took a touch and his shot from just outside the box found the net. Before halftime, Doxa got a third. This time it was a smart through ball from Steve Chirgwin that found Taylor. Taylor used his body to beat the last defender before rounding the keeper and slotting home with his left foot.

In the second half, it was all Doxa to start. The fourth came from some neat play on the right hand side. Raul Dominguez and Steve Merker combined, before Merker crossed to the back post where Taylor was on hand to volley home – his second of the game and fourth in two appearances this season. The fifth came from a direct free kick. Tai Doan won the free kick on the top of the box, set-piece specialist Sean Lockhart supplied the finish, bending the ball over the wall and past the keeper. In the final 15 minutes, Doxa took the foot of the pedal and let Antes Columbia score, one of which came about after Ritchie Million was nutmegged. He got his revenge by taking the same player down in the box for a penalty, all while wearing a pair of brown Puma boots with green laces!

Doxa Kick Off New League With 3-0 Win

Doxa Italia 3 – Centro Americano 0

Doxa wrapped up a solid weekend with a hard-earned 3-0 victory to open up the Angels Confrontational league on Sunday. Centro Americano F.C. proved to be tough competition and could hav been two goals up by half time only for some fantastic saves from Justin Commins. The teams went in level at the break.

It took some time, but the first goal came from a fantastic Doxa build up. Andrew Villalobos and debutant Pablo exchanged several passes on the left before finding Ryan Taylor in the box. Taylor slotted the ball home over the keeper. Shortly after, Taylor got his second when we shot/miss-hit a shot from 25 yards out. The keeper slipped, allowing the bobbling ball an opportunity to cross the line. The final goal came when Steve Merker and Andrew Villalobos combined just outside the box, with Villa grabbing his first of the season.

Shout out to all involved in putting the Angels Confrontational league together. The first weekend of the league seemed to go very well, with everything set up in a very professional manner, from the amenities to the refereeing. We at Doxa are excited to be part of the league in its inaugural season!
