Artesia DES

Doxa Crowned CSL Champions, 7-0 Win

Doxa Celebrate

Doxa wrapped up the 2012/13 CSL title in style on Saturday night, taking a 7-0 win versus Artesia DES at Manhattan Village.

In all fairness, the game was closer than the scoreline stated and Artesia definitely came to play. It took Doxa 20 minutes before they carved out their first real opportunity, and Ilia Nazarov took full advantage. A through ball from Bryan Byrne gave Nazarov a 1-on-1 with the keeper, and he scooped it over him into the empty net. The second came from a long ball as center-back, Nas Koubouras, cleared a ball. It found its way over the Artesia defense where Byrne chased it down before knocking it around the keeper and into the net. The score was 2-0 at half time.

Doxa made some half time changes and came out firing in the second half, knowing there was only 45 minutes left before sealing a consecutive league title. Nazarov got his 2nd of the game off a Byrne assist and the same duo teamed up for Byrne’s second of the game to increase the lead to 4-0. Then Byrne was taking down in the penalty box, and Gabe Valencia stepped up to score his first league goal of the season. Byrne wrapped up his hattrick, before Devin Toohey scored a well deserved goal just before the end of the game.

With the win, Doxa are now 8 points clear with only 2 games left to play.

Figueroa Display Propels Doxa to 4-2 Win

Doxa continued their winnings ways with a 4-2 away win versus Artesia DES on Sunday morning.

It turned out to be a slow start for Doxa, with Joe Cartlidge forgetting to bring the gear with to the field. Thankfully, it arrived before kick-off and Joe took over laundry duty for another week! On the field, it was a slightly faster start and after only 10 minutes, Doxa took the lead. Ricky Figueroa played a through ball to Bryan Byrne who beat the offside trap and tucked the ball past the onrushing keeper. The second also came from Ricky Figueroa, this time some great work on the right led to a pinpoint cross that landed on the head of Eric Meister. Meister gladly nodded it home for his second goal of the season. Artesia did get back into the game before the half, after Aaron Perez tried to clear the ball off the strikers leg – sadly, rebounds usually come back toward you, as was the case in this instance!

In the second half, Doxa continued attacking and the third goal came from the same combo as the first. Ricky Figueroa played another through ball to Byrne who duly beat the keeper for his team leading 12th goal of the season. Artesia again battled their way back into the game and threatened to get an equalizer until Ricky Figueroa sealed the result and capped an excellent personal performance. Gabe Valencia was the creator and he was unlucky not to score himself, choosing to give Ricky the tap-in instead of attempting a tight shot himself.

With the win, Doxa stay top with 8-from-8 wins. Next weekend, the team travels to play Cal FC in Thousand Oaks with a 5pm kick-off.

3-0 Win Over Artesia Maintains Unbeaten Start

Doxa continued winning ways on Sunday with a solid 3-0 away win over Artesia DES.

In similar fashion to Friday nights game, it didn’t take Doxa long to get on the scoresheet and it was again Bryan Byrne. Steve Merker applied some pressure on the defender who played a weak ball back to his keeper, Byrne ran into it and beat the keeper with a low shot. Byrne turned provided for the second when his cross from the right was met on the full volley by Vardan Adzemian. The keeper had no chance, giving Adzemian his first Doxa goal. The score stayed at 2-0 until half-time with Doxa bossing the game.

In the second half, Doxa introduced several subs including Matt Upton for the first time in over a year. But, it was another sub that got on the scoresheet for the third goal. Devin Toohey played a ball down the right side to Andrew Villalobos, who beat his man and found Tai Doan in the area. Doan took a touch before drilling his shot past the keeper, sealing the win. Doxa could and probably should have scored a few more, but it was a solid away win and the 3-0 scoreline did the game justice. Doxa were particularly strong at the back, with Spencer Shortland putting in a solid display – although the referee did have words with him before halftime!!

Doxa Take 3-0 Win Away to Artesia

Doxa completed the league double over Artesia DES with a comprehensive 3-0 away win on Sunday.

15 minutes in, Kyle Holland hit a cross-field pass to Ricky Figueroa around midfield. He collected and picked his head up to play a threaded pass with precision and weight to Steve Merker who scored the first goal. Second goal came just before the stroke of halftime. Ilia Nazarov (who arrived right at kick-off) was subbed on for Holland at left midfield. A quick combination worked an opening in the center of midfield to spring Villalobos down the left side, after a few dance moves usually reserved for the disco-tech’s in Hollywood, Villa separated, to pass a deft ball to the back of the six yard box. Chirgwin collected craftfully around his defender with his right peg across his body, setting up the defender to swipe & miss, the ball sat nicely for him to smash low into the far post with his left instep.

The third goal came in the second half. A ball found Ricky’s feet on the right side just advanced passed midfield. He cut inside his defender and played a daisy-cutter to the Russian Rocket breaking into the penalty area. The rocket didn’t even need to break stride, the ball stroked his foot into the back of the net just as the large rhinoceros goalkeeper was coming out of his cage.

2- Steve Chirgwin (Andrew Villalobos)

CSL Season Starts With 2-1 Win

Doxa Italia team pic

Doxa Italia 2 Artesia DES 1

Bryan Byrne scores in the 88th minute to earn 3 points from Artesia.

Doxa Italia opens the 2010 CSL with a 2-1 victory over Artesia DES at Manhattan Beach Village Saturday night. Doxa’s first scheduled match for the season was a forfeit as CGSA failed to produce a team in time for the match. Artesia was coming off a 3-0 win against Garden Grove Gunners. They were up for the match and started fast with high pressure and a quick pace but the Doxa midfield of Dave Adams, Aaron Craggs and Mat Davis was up to the task and kept possession for most of the first half and sending Doxa forwards Bryan Byrne and Ryan Taylor on run after run. Ryan Taylor came close to giving Doxa the lead after Bryan Byrne made a run up the right side and into the box and centering a bouncing ball that Taylor hit first time in stride whistling the ball just inches wide of the goal. Doxa had several more attacks and kept the Artesia keeper busy as he had to make several saves to keep the scoreline even at 0-0.

Veteran Doxa Italia goalkeeper Brian Burdue had very little do do in the first half thanks to the stellar defense of “Angry” Nate Reeves, Nas Koubouras, Eric Meister and Marcus Watson. But when called into action Burdue snuffed any Artesia attack by swiping crosses out of the air and coming quick off his line to take any through ball including one great save/tackle taking away what Artesia must of thought was a sure goal.

The 2nd half saw Doxa switch out the midfield with Steve Chirgwin, Ricky Figueroa and Eddie Pinto coming in to see if they could produce a Doxa goal. But at the 60th minute, against the run of play, it would be Artesia who struck first with a free kick given about 30 yards froam goal. A ball was lifted into the box and fell to an Artesia forward who volleyed the ball into the back of the net. Doxa players were calling for a hand ball on the play but the ref was having none of it.

Doxa started to unravel a bit and 5 minutes later another free kick was awarded to Artesia. The ball was sent into the box and an Artesia player flicked it on towards goal. Doxa keeper Brian Burdue did well to get his hand on the shot slowing the the ball down but an onrushing Artesia forward knocked the ball into the net. The Artesia celebration was short-lived however, as the linesman had his flag up signaling for an offside.

Doxa regained it’s shape and once again dominated possession. Artesia – as it had most of the game – played with 11 behind the ball thwarting of attack after attack. In the 75th minute Doxa was awarded a penalty for a hand ball in the box. Marcus Watson, who had somehow persuaded/fought off Steve Chirgwin and Eddie Pinto to take the spot kick, calmly sent the Artesia keeper the other way. Artesia 1 Doxa Italia 1. Doxa didn’t stop there and kept the pressure on. Artesia was determined to get the draw but in the 88th minute Ricky Figueroa intercepted a pass in the Doxa midfield and sent the ball back to Brian Burdue. Burdue took a touch and noticed that Figueroa was off to the races and knocked a perfect 60 yard ball on a rope to Figueroa in stride. With a quick touch to control, Figueroa sent a perfect ball to the sprinting Bryan Byrne who smashed the ball into the back of the net and ending any ill conceived thought that Artesia had that they would leave Manhattan Beach Village with any points. The center ref blew the final whistle 2 minutes later and the boys went off to Grunions Bar and Grill in Manhattan Beach to celebrate the successful beginning of the 2010 CSL.
