CSL Season Kicks-Off With 4-0 Win

Doxa 4 – Pateadores 0

Doxa started the season in fine form Saturday night, beating Pateadores 4-0 at Manhattan Village. It was a new look Doxa, with several players making their competitive debuts for the club. After a tight opening twenty minutes where Aaron Perez was called into action several times, Doxa took a hold of the game and banged in 3 goals before half-time. Eric Meister was the player to break the deadlock off of a sweeping move that included an assist from Andrew Marinez.

With several changes made in the second half, the game was a little more controlled and as a result there were less chances. Doxa did get a 4th though, as Sean Lockhart placed a penalty into the bottom corner after Tai Doan had been taken down in the box.

CSL Cup Final Spot Booked 4-1 Win

Doxa 4 – Pateadores 1

Doxa put together a very solid team performance on Saturday night at the village, booking their spot in the final of the CSL Cup. Pateadores came into the game confident, having held Doxa to a 4-4 draw two weeks ago. But, by halftime, Doxa had the ball in the back of the net 4 times, finishing off the game early. Bryan Byrne claimed a first half hat-trick off of assists from Kyle Holland, Alex Bengard and Eric Meister, while Kyle Holland bagged his third goal of the season. In truth, it could have been more than 4, with several great through balls from the Doxa back and midfield line splitting the Pateadores defense wide open.

The second half was played at a slower pace, with Pateadores claiming a consolation goal late in the game.

Hard Fought Away Win Versus So-Cal Real

Doxa had to battle hard in order to win 2-1 away to So-Cal Real on Sunday morning. The first goal came less than 5 minutes in, when Bryan Byrne was taken down just inside the penalty area. Pete Hazdovac stepped up and dispatched the penalty in style. So-Cal responded pretty soon after to make it 1-1. Steve Merker was causing a nuisance up top, and had one or two looks to get Doxa back into the lead. Hazdovac also had the ball in the back of the net at one stage only for the linesman to flag offside. Brandon Avery made some stunning saves to keep the scores tied at half time.

The second half was a completely different story, with Doxa creating wave after wave of attack. The second goal came after a sweeping move from the back. Marcus Watson found Byrne at the halfway line, Byrne found Raul Palomares on the wing who crossed to Ilia Nazarov. Nazarov’s first shot was blocked, only for the rebound to fall nicely at his feet and he blasted it into the top corner. Shortly after, Doxa should have had a second penalty when Byrne was taken out in the box – only for Masa Kaneda riffled the rebounding ball over the cross bar. Rumor has it he already thought the ref had blown his whistle (ahem). Another goal was controversially called offside when a corner was knocked on by Eric Meister to head of Ilia Nazarov and into the back of the net. Good win on the road!

Doxa Take 4-3 Thriller Versus Garden Grove

Doxa got back to winning ways at home versus the Garden Grove Gunners on Saturday night, in what was a thriller of a game.

The first goal of the game came for Doxa. Nate Reeves played a long ball over the top that Bryan Byrne ran on to. Byrne squared the ball across to Derk Droze, who chested the ball to the onrushing Masa Kaneda. Masa struck a half volley that found the inside of the left post. That ended up being the only goal of the first half. To start the second half, John Gerrard made 8 changes – hoping to freshen things up. The opposite happened, as Doxa gave up 2 very quick goals to go 2-1 behind.

With things looking bleak, Doxa managed to get level when Bryan Byrne struck a shot from the right that nestled in the far corner of the net. And less than a minute later they went 3-2 up, this time Sean Lockhart scoring a signature Locky goal! Picking the ball up at the edge of the area, Locky picked his spot and drilled the ball into the top right corner. Bit the lead didn’t last long, with a ball over the Doxa defense finding a Gunners forward who evened the scores at 3-3. With the game looking like it would end in a tie, Doxa managed to find a way to score. Marcus Chorvat’s half volley just outside the box found the chest of Locky and squirmed past the keeper.

With that, Doxa held onto the ball and saw out the clock for a 4-3 win. Next weekend, the team travels to Las Vegas for the Silver Mug Invitational.
