Doxa Fail to Qualify For US Open Cup 2012

It proved to be a short lived weekend for Doxa at Region IV qualifiers, with a 4-3 loss in Fridays game a team not turning up proving to be the deciding factors.

Normally, teams are grouped into 4′s, but because one team failed to show, Doxa only played 2 group games. On Saturday morning, the team came away with a comprehensive 9-0 victory, finishing second in group play. Unfortunately, this means that Doxa will not participate in either Open Cup or Nationals this summer.

Doxa Win Region IV Qualifiers

Doxa Open Cup 2011Doxa celebrated winning the Region IV title with a very hard fought battle on Sunday, giving the team its first birth in the National Amateur tournament that takes place in Kentucky this summer. A spot in the Lamar Hunt Open Cup was cemented on Saturday when Doxa finished top of group play. That game will take place in June.

Doxa 1 – 1 DV-B
(Doxa win 4-1 on Pks)

After going 1-0 down early in the first half, Doxa battled for the remainder of the game to find an equalizer – and managed to do so in the 78th minute to force extra time. It took the team a while to get things going in the first half, with the 4th game of the weekend on a soft, high grass surface seeming to take full effect on player legs. The DV-8 goal came off a free kick, with a curling ball meeting the head of a DV-8 player.

Doxa went to a 3-4-3 in the second half looking to find an equalizer. After several good chances, the goal finally came off a Steve Chirgwin free kick. His cross met the head of captain Nas Koubouras, who played the ball back across goal to the on-rushing Bryan Byrne. Byrne finished a diving header into the top corner. For the remainder of the game, including two 15 minute overtime periods, Doxa pushed for a winner but just couldn’t manage to finish things off.

When it came to penalties, the Doxa boys went 4 for 4, with Steve Chirgwin, David Adams, Andrew Villalobos and Andrew Marinez all scoring. Marinez was the one who knocked the all important PK in the bottom right corner, sending the keeper the wrong way. In goals, Brian Burdue got his hand on the first penalty, while his presence in goals made the DV-8 2nd and 3rd PK taker send their shots over the bar, sealing Doxa’s win!

#1 – Bryan Byrne (Koubouras)

Open Cup – Day 1 Update

Doxa Italia 1 – 1 Rosal FS

In what turned out to be a very competitive match between two of the best teams in the tournament, both teams had to settle for a draw.

Doxa had a 20 player strong squad to choose from for Fridays game. Both teams had some good opportunities in the first half, but the score at the break stood at 0-0. Less than a minute into the second half, Rosal took the lead off a long ball from the back. With that, Doxa stepped it up a gear and had several good chances to level the game, only for some good defending and goalkeeping from Rosal. Eventually, Doxa broke through – with 10 minutes left on the clock. Steve Chirgwin played a delicate little chip over the top that found an onrushing Ilia Nazarov and the Russian rocket one timed the ball into the bottom corner. For the remainder of the game, Doxa pressed and were unlucky not to find a winner.

Doxa continue play at 9am tomorrow morning, when they play ABQ Metro FC who won their first game 5-0. Stay tuned for an update tomorrow.

Doxa Open Cup Schedule 2011

During the weekend of May 20th-22nd, a 22-man Doxa squad will be heading to Sacramento to take part in qualifications for the US Lamar Hunt Open Cup. Below is a preliminary snap-shot of the weekends schedule.

National Cup, Sacramento, Update

Doxa lost out on qualification for the this years Open Cup on goal difference. The 7-0 win overĀ  Yakima was beaten by a 10-1 scoreline when Sahauros played the same opponent. In hindsight, opening up against Yakima played against Doxa who could have benefited from knowing how many goals they needed to score. For 60 minutes of the game with Sacramento Gold, Doxa were down to 10 men and were, for the most part, the better team. In fact, Doxa created several good opportunities before Gold scored on their one shot on goal in the second half!

Overall, the tournament was a good stepping stone for the club, with all 22 players traveling to Sacramento. The new jerseys and t-shirts were also a huge success, allowing the team to be represented in style.
