Away Win at Pateadores Continues 100% Start

Doxa Warm Up

It ended up being a tough earned 2-1 win away to Pateadores on Sunday, making it 6 wins from 6 in CSL action.

Both teams came out with the intent of making it an exciting game and there were plenty of chances created and missed. In fact, several guilt edged opportunities that could have changed the dynamics of the game were missed. At half, the teams went in level on score, but Pateadores ended up down a man after a defender took down Doxa’s Bryan Byrne when he ran in the box with no defenders between him and the goal.

Up a man, Doxa completely took over the game and the breakthrough finally came 10 minutes into the second. Bryan Byrne beat several player on the right and reached the endline, before squaring a ball back to the unmarked Ryan Purtell in the box. Purtell somehow managed to settled his nerve (and his stomach) as he knocked the ball home. Questions are still being asked as to why Purtell, who is a center back, ended up in the opposing box – but it was a very much welcomed goal. The second came from Steve Chirgwin – his 3rd of the season. Chirgy picked the ball up 25yards out and sweetly struck a bending shot past the outstretched keeper. Pateadores did get a goal back late in the game, thanks to a PK. Miguel Alvarez gave away the PK and picked up the yellow jersey for hand-balling in the box, with no players around him! In the final moments of the game, Pateadores nearly stole an unexpected point, only to have Brandon Avery make a terrific save, diving to his left and getting his fingers on a shot that was destined for the upper V.

Next week, Doxa take on OC Crew at 8pm, Manhattan Village.

Doxa Claim CSL Cup Title; Completes Double

Doxa-Champions

Doxa 2 – Pateadores 1

It was an extremely competitive match on Saturday night as Doxa Italia and Pateadores took part in the 2012 CSL Cup Final.

Both teams were stripped of some first team players, and there were limited subs on either bench. But that didn’t slow down the energy through the first half. It was Pateadores who struck first, when a free kick swung in from the right met an onrushing attacker and squirmed inside the right post. In truth, it was probably a deserved lead, with Doxa failing to really step into second gear through the first half.

In ther second half, Doxa went on the offensive and after several good opportunities, the equalizer came from a long ball into the box. It was Andrew Villalobos on the left hand side who played a well struck ball in the air, and it was Bryan Byrne who rose highest in the box to nod it into the corner of the net. With that, Doxa raised the level and began to press for a winner. With time running out, another long ball into the box proved to be the winning formula. Steve Chirgwin played in a free kick in the 88th minute, and it was Ricky Figueroa who made a well timed run across the backline, meeting the ball just in front of the keeper. Rather than swinging at the ball, Figueroa defty touched it around the keeper and into the back of the net – then queue the celebration. In reality, the celebration probably represented the most running anyone has seen Ricky do all season – but it was well deserved since it turned out to be the winning goal.

Pateadores did press for a winner in the remaining minutes and did have one or two half chances, but Doxa held out for the win and as a result bagged a terrific league and cup double!

Goals:
#1 – Bryan Byrne (Andrew Villalobos)
#2 – Ricky Figueroa (Steve Chirgwin)

CSL Season Kicks-Off With 4-0 Win

Doxa 4 – Pateadores 0

Doxa started the season in fine form Saturday night, beating Pateadores 4-0 at Manhattan Village. It was a new look Doxa, with several players making their competitive debuts for the club. After a tight opening twenty minutes where Aaron Perez was called into action several times, Doxa took a hold of the game and banged in 3 goals before half-time. Eric Meister was the player to break the deadlock off of a sweeping move that included an assist from Andrew Marinez.

With several changes made in the second half, the game was a little more controlled and as a result there were less chances. Doxa did get a 4th though, as Sean Lockhart placed a penalty into the bottom corner after Tai Doan had been taken down in the box.

CSL Cup Final Spot Booked 4-1 Win

Doxa 4 – Pateadores 1

Doxa put together a very solid team performance on Saturday night at the village, booking their spot in the final of the CSL Cup. Pateadores came into the game confident, having held Doxa to a 4-4 draw two weeks ago. But, by halftime, Doxa had the ball in the back of the net 4 times, finishing off the game early. Bryan Byrne claimed a first half hat-trick off of assists from Kyle Holland, Alex Bengard and Eric Meister, while Kyle Holland bagged his third goal of the season. In truth, it could have been more than 4, with several great through balls from the Doxa back and midfield line splitting the Pateadores defense wide open.

The second half was played at a slower pace, with Pateadores claiming a consolation goal late in the game.

Newcomers Pateadores Fall 3-1 to Doxa

Doxa started the year with a 3-1 win over league newcomers Pateadores on Saturday evening at Manhattan Village.

As usual a strong crown showed up to watch Doxa play in their first game of 2010. They had the advantage of watching Doxa start against 10 men, with Pateadores failing to field a full team at kick off. By the time they had an 11th man, Doxa had taken the league. mat Davis played a wonderful through ball to Pete Hazdovac who neatly chipped the ball over the onrushing keeper. Half time saw the score sitting at 1-0.

John Gerrard, who was officially making his first appearance back as Doxa coach, made some half time changes that sparked Doxa into action. The second goal didn’t take long to come, and it was a give and go between Mat Davis and Steve Merker that allowed the later to play a square ball to Raul Palomares. Raul shot first time, drilling the ball just inside the left post. Doxa should have been awarded a penalty in the build up but the ref allowed advantage and Doxa took advantage.

Doxa’s third goal came less than 10 minutes after the second. It was Ricky Figueroa who got the assist, crossing to Bryan Byrne who volleyed the ball (Robin Van Persie style) in the top right corner of the net. The third goal allowed Gerrard to make some changes and get some fresh faces on the field. Two of those new players combined for what would have been goal of the season – only for the linesman to raise his flag. Andrew Villalobos fluffed a shot, which went sky high over the last defender, dropping for Zach Roberts to drive into the top corner. One of those “if only” moments! Pateadores did get on board in the final 5 minutes of the game, taking away a near perfect performance from Doxa’s backline and Brandon Avery in goal.

Doxa play at home again next weekend, against CGSA at 6pm.
