Chirgwin PK Seals Important 1-0 Win vs PSA

Chirgy

Doxa took a vital step closer to a consecutive CSL title with a very well earned 1-0 win vs PSA on Sunday. With the win, Doxa move 11 points clear of second placed PSA Elite, with only 9 points left up for grabs.

It could have been an extremely different result on the day though, had PSA not missed a PK in the first half. Aaron Perez guessed the right way, but he wasn’t needed as the ball drifted wide of the post. With the wind bearing down on his goal, it was a case of getting through the first half for Doxa. In saying that, PSA didn’t have anymore clear chances before half. Doxa actually had a few opportunities themselves, only for some fine saves off Greg Piechota and Bryan Byrne efforts.

The second half produced a very polished performance from Doxa and it was Greg Piechota who proved the difference maker, beating a defender 1vs1 before being dragged down in the box. Steve Chirgwin stepped up and one stepped before guiding the ball into the top corner. Doxa defended resolutely for the rest of the half, with everyone on the pitch playing a key role at some stage. Things were summed up when Joe Cartlidge won several huge sliding tackles in quick succession, ensuring a clean sheet was maintained.

Doxa play at home on February 9th vs Artesia. A win in that game will seal the title for Doxa – all fans are encouraged to add the date to their calendar and come out to show support.

Doxa Top PSA Elite To Gain CSL Advantage

Doxa Home PSA

Doxa moved 6 points clear at the top of the CSL on Saturday night, with an important 4-0 win over PSA Elite. The game at Manhattan Beach provided plenty of entertainment, but an unfortunate ending.

This game was a long awaited match-up between the two Cal South giants. With the over-hyped Cal FC struggling to adapt to the Coast League, it is once again a two horse race for the top spot. With Doxa and PSA making the USASA National Finals the past two years (Doxa in 2011 and PSA in 2012) and both teams being undefeated in the current season, it was going to be a battle.

The match started off with Doxa controlling the play for the first 20 min. No real attempts on goal but possession belonged to Doxa. PSA adjusted and was in control for the next 20 min with some youthful energy and some sloppy Doxa passing/giveaways. The end of the half saw Doxa with two said chances only to be denied by the excellent goalkeeping by the PSA Keeper. First making a brilliant save of a Devin Toohey header and immediately followed by a Bryan Byrne blast saved at point blank range.

End of first half nil-nil.

The 2nd began with a flurry of both sides trying to take control of the game. A combination play at midfield created a run up the right wing, with Bryan Byrne making a dash to the end line and serving a cross that after being flicked on by a Devin Toohey fell to the awaiting mustached, Argentine, “I just had a baby”, E-double D-IE that’s the way we spell Eddie Pinto side volleyed home the first goal.

Not too long after was a bad judgment from a PSA defender that saw a take down in the box. Steve “White Pele” Chirgwin fought off 10 other Doxa players for the PK and calmly mishit his normally upper 90 smash into the lower right side netting, giving Doxa a two-nil advantage.

Now it became the Bryan Byrne show…Goal of the match: Byrne took advantage of a PSA mistake at midfield which saw a ball from Steve Chirgwin end up at the streaking Bryan Byrne (though a streaking Bryan Byrne is awesome we will never visually know what that really means). Byrne raced up the midfield and CRUSHED a bender into the upper 90. BRILLIANT GOAL. Shortly after, an amazing show of receiving a ball from Nas Koubourus and making a run to the end line, saw Byrne alone in the box with the PSA Keeper only to see Byrne show that keepers belong in a Box, he smashed in a lefty and slot home the 4th Doxa goal.

PSA fell apart after that with a defender throwing an elbow in a dodgy tackle that resulted in a straight red card.

It was about self preservation after that. But with a little less than 5 minutes left to play, a PSA defender went in a little too hard for a 50/50 ball and saw him land awkwardly on his wrist. Calls for 911 were called out and the final whistle blew. No matter how we shout, scream or simply laugh at each other on the pitch, no one ever likes to see another player sustain such an unfortunate injury. All at Doxa want to wish Azeez a full and speedy recovery.

On a final note, big shout out to the large crowd that showed up for the game – your support is always appreciated!

Away Win Secures 2011/12 CSL Title

Doxa Champions 2012

PSA Elite 1 – Doxa 2

Doxa went into this weekends 1st v 2nd clash with a 2 point advantage, needing only a draw to ensure they kept top spot going into the last round of games – but instead the team regained the CSL title they lost last season with a 2-1 win.

It was Doxa who got on the board first. Steve Chirgwin picked up the ball just inside the PSA half and played a perfectly weighted pass through the defense to an on-rushing Bryan Byrne. Byrne took a touch before slotting the ball underneath the keeper. The game had a very fluid flow throughout and it was a giveaway just at the halfway line that allowed PSA to quickly break and get an equalizer before half-time. Scores were 1-1 at the break.

Paul Rottenberg, who took the coaching reigns for the day, made the decision to bring on Ilia Nazarov at the break and it payed off as the Russian Rocket delivered less than 5 minutes after entering the field. Steve Chirgwin was again the provider, but this time Nazorav blasted a shot into the bottom corner from just outside the area. It provided a definite momentum swing in the second half and Doxa had several good opportunities to extend the lead, with a Ricky Figueroa shot off the inside of the post proving to be the closest. PSA did create several half chances to equalize and the never stop battling, but Doxa found a way to dig deep and kept possession in the final 10 minutes to see out time.

The win leaves Doxa 5 points clear with only one game left to play – meaning the team regains the CSL title they lost to PSA last season.

PSA Elite definitely came to play on Sunday and put plenty of pressure on Doxa throughout the match, playing some very quick soccer. The teams could meet in the Region IV final next weekend, if both teams finish top of their respective groups.

Doxa Lose in 1st Annual Charity Shield

Doxa fell to a tough 4-1 loss versus PSA Elite in the inaugural Charity Shield game on Saturday night. It was a harsh result in reality, and 2 own goals summed up Doxa’s luck on the night.

It had all started so differently, with Gugo Adzemian scoring for Doxa after only 3 minutes. PSA scored shortly before half-time to leave the score at 1-1. It was the all important 3rd goal that changed things and unfortunately for Doxa it went to PSA. Needing to get back into the game, Doxa sent players forward – on two resultant break-aways, PSA won free-kicks and Doxa conceeded two very unfortunate own-goals.

Next weekend Doxa play their final game of the year versus Hollywood All-Stars in Angels Confrontational action.

Goals:
#1 – Gugo Adzemian (Bryan Byrne)

Doxa Lose to PSA Elite

Doxa Italia suffers a loss in the CSL…It doesn’t happen very often – in fact since joining the CSL in 2004, Doxa Italia has lost maybe 3-4 times in league play.

PSA Elite has been a team on the rise and had been knocking on the “we are here and are on your level” door for a couple of seasons now. Well…PSA came out hard and fast at Concordia University field and was looking for a result from the get go. Doxa fielded a skeleton crew of 13 with several starting players missing – but a strong 13 that could compete. PSA had the early play but a strong Doxa defense held off the PSA early challenge. Both teams struggled to get midfield control of the game but both were pushing to get an early goal. PSA had more of an aggressive approach while Doxa was working an a counter attack.

The first PSA goal came about when a long ball was sent to the 18 yard area and Doxa defender Nas Koubouras screamed that it was his ball and jumped to clear the ball away. Doxa GK Brandon Avery (who was making his first start of the season) came well off his line in anticipation of the cross only to see Nas flick the ball back and over his outstretched hands into the net for an own goal. PSA 1 – Doxa 0.

Doxa had several counter attacks in effect and one would lead to the red card of a PSA player for being the last defender taking down a Doxa forward. No matter as a short time later a Doxa clearance would pinball about in the 18 yard box only to fall perfectly to a PSA forward who smashed a volley home for a 2-0 PSA lead. Doxa pressed and had several opportunities to score only to watch the ball hit the post no less that 4 times.

As the match went on late into the 2nd half…Doxa sent everyone forward as PSA was content with defending 11 behind the ball. With time running out Doxa was pressing hard but PSA worked a productive counter attack that would produce 2 more goals and with the ref blowing the final whistle…hand Doxa it’s first loss of the season.
