Doxa Take Epic Semi-Final, 3-2

Doxa Celebrate

It turned out to be a game to remember on Saturday night, as Doxa battled to a 3-2 win over So-Cal Real in CSL Cup action.

The game actually went to extra-time before a winner was found, both teams had decent opportunities before the eventual game winner was scored by Bryan Byrne in the 6 minutes before the game was set to go to penalties.

Things started pretty poorly for Doxa and they went 1-0 down early on when a through ball beat the offside trap. It wasn’t until the final 5 minutes of the first half that the equalizer was found, even though Doxa had several excellent opportunities before that. Ryan Taylor was dragged down in the box as he tried to meet an incoming cross and Steve Chirgwin stepped up to take the penalty. His resultant spot kick was saved, but he managed to drill in the rebound.

It was much the same in the second half with both teams carving out opportunities. Again So-Cal Real took the lead and it was former Doxa player Andrew Villalobos who got it with a fine strike from 30 yards out. Doxa continued to battle and eventually got the equalizer. Devin Skrade made a tantalizing run down the right before putting an excellent cross into the box. Somehow it evaded everyone but found Mike Piechota on the back post. He knocked it back into the box where it met the head of Bryan Byrne before striking the post and going in.

Extra-time was needed to find a winner and eventually it was Byrne who stuck it away. Justin Valashinas was the provided, after he cut in from the left before sliding a through ball to Byrne, who turned and stroked the ball past the keeper. There was still time for So-Cal Real to graft out an equalizer, but the Doxa backline help firm and kept things at bay.

The CSL cup final line-up is set, with Doxa set to take on PSA Elite in the final. Date TBD.

2013 Starts With Comprehensive 6-1 Away Win

With news filtering through that the 2nd and 3rd placed teams had tied on Friday night, Doxa took full advantage in emphatic style away to So Cal Real.

In what has proved to be a tricky fixture on previous occasions, Doxa started brightly and took the lead after only 5 minutes. Steve Chirgwin was the provider as he drifted a fantastic ball over the back line and on the chest of Bryan Byrne. Byrne controlled and drilled home into the bottom corner, Van Persie style. It took a while longer for the second goal to come, but when it did it was another beauty. This time it was the Piechota brothers who combined. Mike took the ball from right wing, across the field and sweetly knocked a ball over the top for Greg to strike home on the full volley.

With the 2-0 lead, Doxa reentered the second half with more energy and it didn’t take long to get the third. Steve Chirwin was again provider as he played a through ball into the path of Ricky Figueroa, who slotted home for his second goal of the season. The 4th came after some fantastic passing right around the edge of the area and a pass from Chirwin to Byrne to Taylor was blissful to watch, and left Ryan Taylor with the opportunity to delicately chip over the keeper into the corner. The 5th again at the midfield maestro, Steve Chirgwin, involved. After some fine work down the right, his cross from the byline found Byrne open on the back post to volley home. And the final came after some excellent footwork from a rejuvenated source. Ilia Nazarov (just back from vacation) beat several players on the ground before playing in Greg Piechota. With the keeper coming out, Piechota slammed the ball in for his second goal of the game.

With the win, Doxa now lie 11 points clear at the top with 4 games to play, although PSA Elite have 2 games in hand and a crunch home tie with Doxa setup this coming weekend.

Doxa Continue Winning Start; 6-1 Win

Doxa continued their winning start to the CSL season with a 6-1 home win versus So-Cal Real.

In all honestly, it wasn’t plain sailing for Doxa and So-Cal Real did create several good scoring opportunities before Doxa scored the first goal. That goal came compliments of Steve Chirgwin, who latched onto a cross at the back post from Bryan Byrne. Byrne nabbed the 2nd soon after, with a Ryan Taylor flick on finding the forward in the box with no marker. The third was a Piechota special, with Mike finding Greg over the top and the latter drilling home from 12 yards out. The forth came from a Bryan Byrne corner, this time it was Ilia Nazarov grabbing his 2nd of the season with a well placed header. And there was time for a fifth before half time. Byrne’s neat cross from the left was dummied by Nazarov and finely finished by Devin Toohey on the PK spot.

Doxa made several changes at half time, which seemed to kill the game. Real So Cal got a deserved goal with 20 minutes to go, but Doxa secured things a few minutes later. Again, another goal scorer with Sean Lockhart finishing off a stylish Pete Hazdovac dribble/finish. There was some definite speed coming from the Croat as he set up the goal by beating 2 defenders.

The win marks Doxa’s 4th of the season and more impressively the team has now scored 19 goals in the 4 games.

Next week, PSA Elite are the visitors to Manhattan Village, for an 8pm kick-off that is sure to be another classic.

Hard Fought Away Win Versus So-Cal Real

Doxa had to battle hard in order to win 2-1 away to So-Cal Real on Sunday morning. The first goal came less than 5 minutes in, when Bryan Byrne was taken down just inside the penalty area. Pete Hazdovac stepped up and dispatched the penalty in style. So-Cal responded pretty soon after to make it 1-1. Steve Merker was causing a nuisance up top, and had one or two looks to get Doxa back into the lead. Hazdovac also had the ball in the back of the net at one stage only for the linesman to flag offside. Brandon Avery made some stunning saves to keep the scores tied at half time.

The second half was a completely different story, with Doxa creating wave after wave of attack. The second goal came after a sweeping move from the back. Marcus Watson found Byrne at the halfway line, Byrne found Raul Palomares on the wing who crossed to Ilia Nazarov. Nazarov’s first shot was blocked, only for the rebound to fall nicely at his feet and he blasted it into the top corner. Shortly after, Doxa should have had a second penalty when Byrne was taken out in the box – only for Masa Kaneda riffled the rebounding ball over the cross bar. Rumor has it he already thought the ref had blown his whistle (ahem). Another goal was controversially called offside when a corner was knocked on by Eric Meister to head of Ilia Nazarov and into the back of the net. Good win on the road!

5-1 Win Vs So-Cal Real FC

Doxa Italia 5 So-Cal Real FC 1

Behind an Eric Meister double, Doxa continue 100% record.

A strong Doxa team made it 4 wins from 4 on the season with a convincing 5-1 win over league newcomers So-Cal Real. After failing to find a pass in the first 20 minutes of the game, Steve Chirgwin hit a screamer from the top of the box on a half volley to give Doxa the lead. Half time came with the score at 1-0.

Early in the second half it was Eric Meister who gave Doxa the 2-0 lead, and shortly after he made it 3-0 meeting the ball on the back post, heading it onto the post, picking up the rebound and placing it by the keeper. That allowed Doxa to make several substitutions, the left the team shaky for 10 minutes. During that period, So-Cal had several good chances and got on the board with a screamer from just outside the area that left Brian Burdue flapping. The birthday man then gave a kick out straight to a So-Cal forward – and the game could easily have been 3-2 only for the striker to knock it over the bar.

Shortly after, Doxa got back into a rhythm and made it 4-1 when Kamikaze Yuki getting on the end of a Sean Lockhart cross. The game was wrapped up with 10 minutes left when a Marcus Chorvat corner was met by the head of Zach Roberts, who made it 2 goals in 2 games.
